Letterboxing near Lake Arrowhead, PA - Any ideas?

From: Hikers_n_ Hounds (hikers_n_hounds@yahoo.com) | Date: 2004-05-24 05:04:25 UTC-07:00
Good morning all,

Hikers & Hounds will be camping near Lake Arrowhead in the Endless Mountains area of the Poconos this memorial day weekend with our caving buddies. Does anyone know of any boxes within about an hours drive? It would be nice to squeeze three hobbies into one weekend, camping, caving, boxing. Thanks!

For the really adventurous, you can try carving in caves. ;-)

Heck no! I was just suggesting (in a silly way) a means to meld in
yet another hobby. Carving a stamp in a cave! Imagine the abstract
creativity! ;-)

I did see the whole Cave Thread a couple weeks back. I would not
want to start that again. Then again, we could have us newbies
carving lemony snickets in caves with bears. :-O

See, I wouldn't need to carve in a cave, or even with my eyes closed, for abstract creativity. I tried carving once and it looked like a Jackson Pollack (?) piece. It was supposed to be a dancing bear! LOL! That's when I recruited my son to my little team. He's the talent, I am the idea person.

Hikers & Hounds, I haven't actually checked a map to see where Lake Arrowhead is, but I live about 1 hour & 15 min. South of the Poconos (at least, that is driving time to Canadensis or Mt. Pocono). So, I can think of a few boxes that should be within your scope. The new Rt. 33 has shortened driving time. Any boxes in Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Phillipsburg, etc. should be about 45 min. from Mt. Pocono. Nazareth would be even closer, but don't know if there are boxes there. The South Mountain ones would be a bit further. You could check the distance to Hawk Mt., for the Pulpit Rock and Pinnacle boxes. I believe Silent Doug's website has a few intriguing sounding ones in the Poconos too, one near Canadensis & I'm not sure where the rest are. At least one may be a mystery. Also look for Minsi Trail boxes. Sorry I have no personal experiences w/ these except for a couple Allentown ones. West Park is under construction, so "Just Flyin' Through" was not available a week ago. Good luck! -lunaryakketyact

I cam concur about the West Park one being unavailable. They are
painting and maintaining a small building right by it and plopped all
of the construction and destruction implements on the spot where the
box apparently is. My son and I unsuccessfully tried to find it
before setting out to plant the Rodale Fitness Park box in
Trexlertown, PA.

Lock Ridge Park in Aburtis also appears to be missing. The 'big
black rock' has a perfect hiding spot, but alas there was nothing to
be found.

Thanks again for the info. I am pretty sure I am going to hunt some of Silent Doug's boxes. I am thinking of going for the Dingmans Ferry boxes. It's looks like it's a little over an hours drive from where I'll be so they appear to be highly "do-able". Not sure about the 3.25 mile hike and "lot's of steps" but we'll see. I tend to suffer from unbridled optimism, until harsh reality kicks me in the butt and reminds me that I am a 45 year old, incredibly overweight and out of shape woman. But you never know 'til you try, right? As one of my all time favorite 70's bands once sang "You can make it if you try". Anyone know who that was?

Where is Lake Arrowhead? I can't find it on my map. I'm also headed
to the PA Endless Mountains in the near future.
But closer to Wilkes-Barre. Did you get any good leads to any
nearby boxes?? The Allentown/ Bethlehem areas are a little further
south than I was planning on travelling. I've researched all
the "listed" boxes.:) Any scoop folks?

I was there once years ago. Had to google. It's (compass)ESE of W-B.
The closest boxes are probably Allentown if you're coming from the
south. Silent Doug has got some north of there in Scranton. In fact
he's got some NW and SE of W-B if my bearings are correct. Other
boxes are farther away from there unless you pass them on the way. I
don't know your launch point.
